If you’ve upgraded to 2.1 and not noticed yet (I mean, it’s not like we read our own feeds, is it?) the good news is that Ronald Heft has created a plug-in to restore the previous full text feed functionality. Yay.

Right, for about a week now I’ve been having an issue in OSX whereby text is rendering very badly indeed. At random, characters are missing from blocks of text, be that in Web Pages (in Safari and Firefox) in subject lines in Mail.app, on captions on the Dock. All over. If you go back and forward in the web browser the missing characters usually re-appear.

I tried clearing my Font Cache using Linotype’s Font Explorer, which hasn’t resolved the problem. The only possible issue I can think of is that at this exact moment, I do have a a lot of fonts installed on this system. 628, in fact. I’m aware this is a lot. Before I go trawling through enabling, disabling and otherwise organising my Font Library though, can anyone confirm if that sheer number is likely to be a cause of my problem? Like most things, much as it would be pedantic and nice to organise my fonts, it’ll take ages and if it’s not actually going to fix my problem I’d rather put it off.

Shared experiences much appreciated.

At the beginning of February I wrote about the fact that it seemed impossible to test Microsoft’s IE7 beta legally and without hacks without making a large financial outlay for Virtual PC and a fresh Windows XP license.

Today, neatly coinciding with the release of the second beta 2 preview I stumbled upon my long discarded Windows XP Home Edition CD. I swear I thought I’d long lost it. Just before rebooting VPC to reinstall, I figured I’d give Activation one more try – as you do – and if that failed try typing in my Home Edition serial in case that worked and saved me the reinstall (it shouldn’t work).

Somewhat unexpectedly my VPC install of Windows, three weeks outside of the activation grace period, successfully ran the activation procedure. I now have a fully functional second install of Windows using the same license key as my host system. All I had to do was… wait.

Some days you just sigh.

In related news, Google Analytics reckons I’ve only got 35% IE usage visiting the site, with ~50% using Firefox and a whopping 10% using Safari. I guess the low IE usage is quite likely linked to the aforementioned brokenness, though.

Here I am writing up my final report and Word is doing everything in its power to frustrate me. One of the most irritating of its features is related to hung quotes (the use of which Stevie’s typography quest got me into and and I now respond to indented quotes in my documents with faux choking).

Basically, Word was happy with my unordered list style, but refused to automatically hang numbered lists. Each time I select the style I’d have to drag the number back out into the margin. Minor annoyance. Except that when I choose restart numbering for subsequent lists, Word will immediately revert to the default indentation. So I scroll up again and drag each list back in to place.

Then, just now, I restarted numbering on a numbered list again and all my unordered, bulleted lists jumped. The bullet sits in the margin, but the text is a centimetre indented.

I swear, it’s going to be easier to write the final report in HTML.

Oh, just in case anyone is ready to get pedantic on any terminology; I know my typography lexicon sucks.

Update: And, as if by magic here the creators of CSS write about styling for print. Eerie, eh?
